The final hour is the most challenging, as the loose sand makes for a “two steps forward, one step back” experience.

  • 09:00 AM – Breakfast: Arrive back at camp for a hot, hearty breakfast. Pack up your belongings.

  • 10:00 AM – Descent to Sembalun: Begin the 5 to 6-hour trek back down the same trail to Sembalun village. Lunch is served en route (usually at POS 3 or POS 2).

What You Need to Bring

The Absolute Essentials (Gear)

  • Proper Hiking Boots: Ankle support is absolutely critical. The final push to the summit is deep, loose volcanic scree. Ensure they are well broken-in to avoid blisters.

  • Daypack (20L–40L): A lightweight, breathable backpack with a rain cover to carry your daily water, snacks, and layers.

  • Headlamp: Mandatory for the 2:00 AM summit push in pitch darkness. Bring spare batteries.

  • Trekking Poles (included in the price): These will save your knees on the punishing 5 to 6-hour descent and help you keep balance on the slippery sand.

Clothing (Mastering Layers)

Current conditions at the base in Senaru are mostly sunny and 29°C, but temperatures drop drastically as you ascend. At the crater rim camp, it drops to 8–10°C, and the summit can be near freezing (2–5°C) with severe wind chill. Avoid cotton entirely—it traps sweat, stays wet, and will freeze you at altitude.

  • Base Layer: 2 to 3 quick-dry, moisture-wicking t-shirts and one pair of trekking shorts for the hot, humid savanna.

  • Mid Layer: A warm fleece or thermal top.

  • Outer Layer: A high-quality windproof and waterproof jacket.

  • Trekking Pants: Lightweight, quick-dry pants (windproof pants are best for the summit).

  • Extremities: A warm beanie, lightweight gloves (cold hands make it hard to grip rocks), and 2 to 3 pairs of thick woolen socks.

Health, Hygiene & Extras

  • Sun Protection: The UV glare above the clouds is intense. Bring SPF 50+ sunscreen, SPF lip balm, UV-protection sunglasses, and a sun hat.

  • First Aid & Comfort: Muscle rub (like Tiger Balm) for aching calves, blister plasters, painkillers, anti-diarrhea tablets, and wet wipes.

  • Toiletries: Travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and toilet paper packed in a sealable ziplock bag (pack out your trash!).

  • Power Bank: There are no charging stations on the mountain. Keep your phone alive for photos.

  • High-Energy Snacks: Your porters will feed you well, but bring your favorite energy bars, nuts, or chocolate for a quick sugar spike on the final climb.

What to Leave Behind

Leave your large suitcase at your hotel and we will keep it and store in our office. Do not bring Drone camera (Rinjani National Park charge 2.000.000 IDR per trip), heavy DSLR camera setups unless you are a professional, and limit yourself to just one change of clothes for camp and one for trekking.
