Trekking Mount Rinjani is a physically demanding and immensely rewarding adventure. While Syam Trekker Company operates with the highest safety standards, climbing a 3,726-meter active volcano carries inherent risks. To prioritize trekker safety, Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) recently implemented strict mandatory insurance regulations.

Understanding your coverage options—specifically the new TNGR Premium Insurance—is a critical part of your trek preparation with Syam Trekker Company.

1. The Two TNGR Insurance Tiers

When you register for your e-Rinjani permit, TNGR now requires all trekkers to have valid insurance coverage. The national park offers two tiers of protection depending on your existing personal coverage:

  • Tier 1: Basic / Regular Insurance (IDR 10,000): This basic coverage is automatically included in your national park entrance ticket. It covers only standard medical expenses and limited ground-based rescue. It does NOT cover helicopter evacuation.

  • Tier 2: TNGR Premium Insurance (IDR 290,000 / ~USD $18): This upgraded tier was introduced to handle critical, high-altitude emergencies where ground rescue is too slow or impossible. It provides comprehensive safety nets, most notably funding for emergency helicopter rescues.

2. What the TNGR Premium Insurance Covers

If you purchase the TNGR Premium Insurance, your policy is valid for up to 4 days (4 x 24 hours) from the moment you enter the trekking gate. The coverage includes:

Benefit Category Maximum Coverage Limit
Helicopter Evacuation Up to IDR 260,000,000 (with hoist)
Ground Evacuation IDR 10,000,000 to IDR 15,000,000 (depending on location)
Medical Treatment (Accidental) Up to IDR 20,000,000
Accidental Death Compensation IDR 300,000,000
Total Permanent Disability IDR 50,000,000
Repatriation of Remains Up to IDR 10,000,000

Note: Helicopter evacuation is strictly reserved for verified medical emergencies assessed by a doctor (e.g., severe bone fractures, head injuries, extreme hypothermia, or loss of consciousness).

3. Do You Have to Buy the Premium Insurance?

The requirement to purchase the IDR 290,000 Premium tier depends entirely on the personal travel insurance you already hold:

  • If you have comprehensive personal travel insurance: You must verify that your existing policy explicitly covers high-altitude trekking (up to 4,000m) AND helicopter medical evacuation. If it does, you are eligible for the Tier 1 Basic Insurance, and you do not need to pay the additional Premium fee.

  • If your personal insurance only covers standard medical or excludes high altitude/helicopter rescue: You are mandated by TNGR to purchase the Premium Insurance tier. Many standard holiday insurance policies exclude activities above 2,500 meters, leaving you exposed on Rinjani’s 3,726m summit.

4. How Syam Trekker Handles Your Insurance

To ensure a smooth dispatch in the event of an emergency, our team manages your e-Rinjani registration and insurance documentation for you.

Before your trek begins, we require the following from you:

  1. Travel insurance policy number.

  2. Travel insurance provider company name.

If your policy meets TNGR’s safety standards, we will register you under the Basic Tier (included in your package price). If your policy lacks air evacuation coverage, Syam Trekker will facilitate the purchase of the TNGR Premium Insurance on your behalf for the mandatory IDR 290,000 surcharge, ensuring you are fully protected before you take your first step on the mountain.
